A great mythical three-legged crow sent by Amaterasu to guide Emperor Jimmu through the mountains of Kumano to Yamato, where he would found Japan's imperial line.

Card history

The image is striking: a great black crow glides over the jagged peaks of the Kumano mountains, its three legs outstretched as it navigates the treacherous forests below. This is Yatagarasu, the divine messenger sent by the Sun Goddess to act as a celestial GPS for Emperor Jimmu. In the ancient chronicles, Jimmu’s army was lost and exhausted in the rugged wilderness of eastern Japan until this supernatural bird appeared. The extra leg marks the crow as a being of the heavens—a creature that doesn't just fly, but stands firmly in the realms of the past, the present, and the future.

While a three-legged bird sounds like pure fantasy, the imagery has deep roots in ancient science and solar observation across East Asia. In China and Korea, the three-legged crow was a symbol of the sun itself, with its limbs representing the stages of the day: dawn, noon, and dusk. When this symbol arrived in Japan, it transformed from a cosmic icon into a personal guide for the first Emperor. In Jimmu’s "loadout," Yatagarasu represents the most valuable asset a leader can have: information. It symbolizes the moment when a difficult journey receives divine approval, turning a dangerous trek into a destined march toward the throne.

Historically, this legend captures the very real struggle of early Japanese leaders trying to unite a land of dense forests and rival clans. Moving an army through the mountains of the Kii Peninsula was a logistical nightmare; any commander who successfully navigated those heights must have felt like they were being guided by a higher power. Yatagarasu teaches that leadership isn't just about swinging a sword or commanding a front line, it’s about the insight to find the right path and the wisdom to follow a good lead when you see one.

Today, Yatagarasu is one of the most recognizable mythical figures in Japan. You’ll find its image at the Kumano Hongū Taisha shrine, but you might also recognize it in a more surprising place: the official crest of the Japan National Football Team. Whether it’s guiding an ancient emperor through the wilderness or a modern athlete toward a goal, the three-legged crow remains a symbol of renewal and direction. It serves as a reminder that every great achievement begins with the ability to see beyond the trees and find the way forward.
