Card history

When you picture the legendary Winged Hussars of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth charging across the battlefield, your eyes are usually drawn to the towering wings of eagle feathers on their backs. But for the rider in the thick of the fight, the real stars were the naramianniki—the gleaming steel shoulder guards that allowed them to survive the most dangerous cavalry charges in history. Developed in the late 16th century, these pauldrons were a vital piece of the puzzle that transformed the hussars from light scouts into the most prestigious heavy cavalry in Europe.

Unlike the clunky, restrictive suits of armor worn by Western knights, hussar pauldrons were built for speed and "violent" elegance. They were constructed from overlapping steel plates, meticulously riveted together so they could slide over one another like the scales of a fish. This design gave the hussar a full range of motion, which was essential for handling a massive, eighteen-foot-long lance or swinging a curved saber in a blur of motion. These guards were often decorated with gilded edges and brass rivets, signaling that the wearer was not just a soldier, but a noble warrior of the Commonwealth.

The naramianniki played their most important role during the "shock" of the charge. At famous battles like Kircholm (1605) and the Relief of Vienna (1683), hussars accelerated to a gallop in tight formations to shatter enemy lines. In those terrifying seconds of impact, a rider’s shoulders were incredibly vulnerable to enemy pikes or sabers. These steel guards acted as a high-tech shield, deflecting blows while the hussar’s momentum carried him through the enemy ranks. It was this balance of lightweight protection and deadly speed that made the hussars nearly unstoppable for over a century.

Today, these shoulder guards are prized treasures in museums from Warsaw to Kraków. They represent a unique "middle ground" in military history—a blend of Eastern flexibility and Western plate armor. They serve as a tangible reminder of a time when the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was a military superpower, and its "Winged" elite relied on a perfect marriage of craftsmanship and courage to decide the fate of Europe.
